The change of year always focuses the mind on the recent successes and forthcoming hopes for the next 365 days - and here at Ink we have already started 2017 at 500MPH and in full flight mode.

When I think back to Jan 1st 2016, I should have known it was going to be a year of great change. It all kicked off with an exclusive shoot and interview with Hollywood legend, Samuel L. Jackson for United’s Rhapsody Magazine – quite normal you would have thought. After all, we deal with A-listers all the time, right? But, like much that happened in 2016, this was different. Samuel L. Jackson happened to mention that Donald Trump cheated at golf! Cue the now President-Elect, taking to his Twitter account and detonating the following hellfire bomb:

“I don't know @SamuelLJackson, to best of my knowledge haven't played golf w/him & think he does too many TV commercials—boring. Not a fan."

BANG. Of course, then out came the actual photographic evidence of Samuel L. Jackson on the red carpet at the 2001 Oscars ceremony, together with the Trump….what was the incumbent President thinking???  Or would that be expecting too much?

There we were, just doing an interesting celebrity interview and an exclusive photo shoot and then we found Rhapsody magazine setting the news agenda for the week – Thankfully all in a positive and playful way!   Well, as they say: “there is only one worse thing than being talked about”….

We then ran on to win 5 awards at 2016's NATJA Awards and grabbed the front pages again when Cindy Crawford revealed she intended to “move on” from modelling when she turns 50.  Vanity Fair, Elle, Vogue, TMZ, E!, Time, Mail, New York Post and Entertainment Tonight all liked that story… further awards at the Communicator, Platinum List and Spark ceremonies followed and, next thing you know, we’re launching a new National magazine for Amtrak in the USA and a new one for Scoot, out of our Singapore office. It’s certainly been a busy year – but now is not the time for us to rest on our laurels.

January 2017 has already seen us launch new magazines for Qatar Airways and Silk Air in Singapore.

AND (re)launching all three (newly re-imagined) magazines for American Airlines. We are off to a running start.

So what can we take from this upcoming 2017? As we know, here are few certainties in life- but here are a few pretty rock solid predictions:

  1. Airline passenger numbers will go up a further 5% year on year
  2. We will create 3 times as many videos for our clients in 2017
  3. Expect us to launch a couple of new magazines in the next 6 months for brand new international clients
  4. Air travel will continue to get safer year on year
  5. More brands will follow the audience into travel media
  6. Social media companies will drop the “social” and realize that they are actual media companies that have the same editorial and ethical responsibility to provide real journalistic content to the communities they serve

Hmmm…maybe that last prediction was as likely as a Trump vs. Jackson rematch at Augusta?
